Elpida Set to Form Large DRAM Conglomerate with Taiwanese Memory Makers

Elpida Memory, the world’s third largest maker of dynamic random access memory (DRAM), may close the gap significantly with Hynix Semiconductor in the coming months as the company has reportedly reached agreement to form a DRAM conglomerate with three Taiwan-based memory makers.

Elpida plans to integrate its operations with Powerchip Semiconductor Corp., ProMOS Technologies as well as Rexchip Electronics Corp., reports Nikkei business daily publication from Japan.

Microsoft prepares smartphone challenge to Apple

Microsoft is gearing up to take on rival Apple in the smartphone market.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that Microsoft is getting ready to launch an online marketplace akin to Apple’s App Store. In August, Microsoft had started looking for people to head up the new application store. Microsoft is also readying a more sophisticated version of its mobile operating system called Windows Mobile 6.5, the Journal reported.

Samsung Reveals 40nm Fabrication Process for DRAM

Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest maker of dynamic random access memory (DRAM), on Thursday said it has succeeded in developing 40nm process technology for memory products as well as has successfully validated the first DDR2 memory chips made using the process.

Chairman of Wistron Expects Demand for Personal Computers to Rebound in Second Quarter

Panasonic to shed 15,000 jobs

Japanese electronics manufacturer Panasonic is to lay off about 15,000 staff because of the global recession, the company has announced.

Half the redundancies are in Japan, with the rest of the cuts being made globally, a Panasonic spokeswoman told UK on Wednesday. The staff reductions are to be made by March 2010.

In addition, Panasonic announced that 27 factories are to close worldwide 13 in Japan and 14 around the world.
